Award-winning Dubai-based architect Shahrooz Zomorrodi unveiled his first DecoZ Studio furniture collection during the recent edition of INDEX Dubai (24-26 May), generating considerable interest and curiosity from the design community and media.

The furniture was widely admired for being a unique synthesis of contemporary living concepts, designed to deliver maximum comfort. The debut collection follows the success of his Voyage lounge chair, presented in 2021, which generated much interest in the international design community – including publication in the prestigious Italian design magazine Domus.

During INDEX, the Middle East region's premier design and interiors show, Zomorrodi presented six of his unconventional luxury pieces – each designed to offer freedom, flexibility and individuality. His first piece, the rotating, spinning top-like Ark chaise longue, will be a focal point of the display, inviting people to literally flop into it and experience the magic of Zomorrodi's vision for a relaxed lifestyle with a focus on individuality, comfort and quality.

Zomorrodi is the co-founder of DecoZ Studio with his partner Hossein Joneidi. DecoZ Studio, is a new firm designing and manufacturing bespoke contemporary furniture with an artistic twist.

Other pieces revealed and received with much admiration for the design community and developers included : Voyage, a whimsical classic leather-studded design with Middle Eastern values, providing a cocoon in which to relax.

The Cubo sofa is a unique sectional piece made from high-density foam cubes that can be mixed and matched in many configurations to create the ultimate sofa or Middle Eastern majlis-like seating for any space.

Piece of Art is a cute piece of practical furniture with multiple uses, ranging from pouffe to side table. Its unusual shape is itself a talking point, making it a true objet d’art.

Flow is a hand-made contemporary rocker, designed to give the feeling of floating on the calming ocean waves.

Aptly, Zomorrodi's fascination with the rocking movement can also be seen in the Outdoor pouffe. The thin steel metal structure sits either on a rocking chrome base or legs, for a more stable footstool.

"My interest in furniture design was sparked by a friend for whom I designed a TV table, and from then on, I was hooked," Zomorrodi chuckles.

"For decades, I have designed furniture for my [own] projects. However, I have always wanted to create a completely unique collection for the retail market. A collection that would give a new perspective to furniture as pieces of functional art that meet the contemporary lifestyle demands," adds Zomorrodi, who recently completed the interiors and roof top of the fantastical 9292-square meter Tr88House entertainment complex on Bluewaters Island.

Examples of Outdoor have been used to complement the furnishings at the trendy 88 Terrace rooftop, while Ark has been used to complement the furnishings at the food hall.

The DecoZ Studio collection also includes Castle, a bunk bed system for any modern child who dreams of fairy-tale castles and fortresses; and a cushion-inspired leather upholstered bed appropriately called Cushion.

"Today, people are looking for original pieces for their homes and projects; shapes and forms that they may be familiar with but with a new twist – and that is what I have tried to create,” Zomorrodi concludes.

INDEX Dubai 2022

"Dubai is a melting pot of cultures and a gateway to the world, so INDEX Dubai was the ideal platform to present to buyers and designers,” says Zomorrodi

Events Summary

In March 2022, new design brand DecoZ shared the stage with the iconic furniture of famed Italian designer Gio Ponti at the exhibition ‘Domus Design – Tehran 2022’, which took place on Italian Design Day.

The exhibition was dedicated entirely to the history of Italian design in Iran and took place at the residence of Italian Ambassador to Iran, Giuseppe Perrone. The editor of renowned design magazine Domus, Walter Mariotti, was the guest of honour.

An historic building of the Casayan-era complex that houses the Italian Ambassador’s Residence was an appropriate setting for the exhibition, which traced the most representative episodes of the relationship between Italy and Iran in design and architecture. It opened with pieces designed by Ponti in the 1950s and 1960s for the villas he was building in those years – including the spectacular Villa Namazi in Tehran, an Italian architectural jewel in the Middle East that recently survived events that even threatened its existence.
